Former Bafana Bafana forward Tokelo Rantie should be thriving in Europe instead of finding himself in limbo with his career in doubt. This is the view of Victor Jose Matine, who was an assistant coach when Rantie started out his career at Clube Ferroviario de Beira in Mozambique back in Since returning to South Africa at the beginning of , his career has taken a downward trend that has seen him amass just around minutes of football - all at Marumo Gallants last season.
He is a player for the PSL and should even be still scoring goals in Europe instead of wondering where his next contract will come from. There was never a day when he gave us problems be it a coach or any official at the club. His age is acceptable for him to still be playing. He was a fantastic player for us here. I have also taken an interest because he was once with us here. Tokelo was one of the strikers who was very fast when he was here with us and scored the two goals in the last game of the season which saved us from relegation.
He is very fast, intelligent, tactically and technically adept as well," Matine added. In terms of the physical nature it is also a step up, but he is a big, stocky player and he will cope with that. He did not play much in South Africa, but did have a season on loan at Orlando Pirates and became a fans' favourite there. Malmo beat Hibs a few weeks ago and he was the star of the game - he scored one and set up two and he is in form and I think Bournemouth are signing him at a good time.
It was a way to get into a bigger league in Europe as he knew a lot of scouts look at the Swedish league. He was blocked. I mean in each and every team that he played for, there were a lot of critics.
I remember one person saying, 'Hey man, you know since Teko started playing football for this team they haven't won a cup. That's another way of blocking people. You are not going there to demand, just because you played for so and so — those are bygones again.
It doesn't mean, when you go to Swaziland, people will forget what you have done. They can still see you through the window mos [sic] — you are playing there. Go there with a positive mind. Well, we heard about the shenanigans that have been going on you know, I was also hurt to see a professional player like Rantie abscond and not report for duty [at Genclerbirligi in Turkey]. When he was at his top form, he absconded, and I think it killed him a lot.
