What I do like is "electrical" screws like for inside electrical panels, wiring boxes, etc. They tend to be compatible with flat, square and star because of the design. Jun 19, 18, Most of the stripping of the heads of Phillips screws is due to the screw itself being manufactured incorrectly.
Secondary is incorrectly made bits and screwdrivers. If the fastener and the bit are to spec, the fastener can be put on the bit for insertion and will be retained by the bit without any magnetism being involved. And then there is PoziDriv. You can easily mess up the head of a PoziDriv screw by using a Phillips bit or screwdriver.
I'm considering getting some bits or at the least a screwdriver to do the job as I only have Phillips. Red Squirrel said:. Humpy Diamond Member. Mar 3, 4, Their disadvantage is also their advantage, they have to be installed with a sense of purpose. Slotted are also by far the most aesthetic of the drive types, more reminiscent of a vagina as opposed to the Philips or star drive. I wouldn't use anything else for custom doors or furniture for just those reasons alone.
Reactions: NetWareHead. Jan 26, 9, Philips will more easily strip than slotted. The only issue with slotted is if you aren't centered in the slot you will get some wobble as you drive it.
Philips will "cam out" and strip with too much torque. Slotted, as Humpy said is the most aesthetic driven screw, philips is the most useless, and Torx is probably the best or at least among the best for driving.
Jun 12, 18, 2, People also screw up Phillips screws by using a Reed and Prince screwdriver. A proper phillips screw and driver are hard to strip out by hand or a driver.
People grab a reed and prince screwdriver and ruin phillips head screws and blame it on the phillips head. Last edited: Feb 26, A proper phillips screw. Mar 14, 2, Scarpozzi Lifer. Then, what's the point of flat head screws? The slotted head screw commonly but incorrectly called a flat head is the oldest type of screw in use today. Many people think they are used on light switch covers still for this reason.
Additionally, when were flat head screws first used? Metal screws and nuts used to fasten two objects together first appeared in the fifteenth century. In , English instrument maker, Jesse Ramsden invented the first satisfactory screw -cutting lathe.
Ramsden inspired other inventors. Slotted Fillister head machine screws have a large over sized head and are used to attach metal to metal or metal to wood. A Fillister head machine screw , sometimes called a cheese head screw , is similar to a Pan head machine screw but with greater side height. The reason for the different styles is cost and torque. Phillips screws are self-centering, making powered screwdrivers possible. They're somewhat more expensive to produce than slotted-head.
They tend to 'cam-out' easily under torque, making it hard to apply much torque. Flat head screws are good for wood as they prevent overtightening and thus help prevent stripping. Are JIS screws still used? Yes, a JIS screwdriver is the correct tool but not having it isn't a big deal. It is easy to modify a Phillips driver into a JIS - just grind off the tip. Most fasteners from Asia have been and are JIS standard. This may have been news 40 years ago, but should be now.
Henry F. Phillips patented the Phillips head screw, which self-centers the screwdriver, making it easier to effectively place the screw quickly. This screw head type is arguably the most commonly found in nearly any application. Not only do electric screwdrivers speed up the process, they also help ensure the screw is straight. Although slotted head and Phillips head screw drives are common and effective, they both suffer from slipping and stripping.
For example, the Robertson screw drive is much more resistant to slipping, which is a serious issue with slotted head screws. They are also much less likely to strip, which is a problem for Phillips screw drives. There are so many screw head types that we could spend all day talking about them. Some, like the slotted tamper proof screw only go one way, while others, like the hex, were created to be effective in tight spaces.
Some screw head types are better in some circumstances, while different screw head types are a better choice in others.
